Find a Convenient Location

When you are planning to work out and start a steady fitness program, it is helpful to have access to a local gym where you can complete your workout indoors. A gym that is close to your home or work will make it easier to get in your workout each day. When you don't have to drive a long distance, it makes the prospect of going to and actually driving to the gym an easier one and something you can commit to for a regular schedule. 

It is also helpful when you can find a gym that is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. So, if you want to go work out after your late shift, you can go work out at 11 p.m. and avoid having to compete for your favorite workout equipment with a busy gym. A 24/7 gym is also great if you want to work out before your early shift, so you can go exercise at 3 a.m., for example. But in addition to the gym's schedule, look at the types of classes available, the machines and equipment that you can use to get a workout, or the types of and variety of free weights. If you want to hire a personal trainer, many gyms provide this to their members. 

Plan Your Workout Time

When you have found the right gym and at a convenient location, you can choose when you will go to the gym for your exercises. Some people do better working out first thing in the morning when they are refreshed from sleep. If you find that you are groggy in the morning but want to take advantage of your rejuvenated energy level, consider drinking a cup of coffee, or another caffeinated beverage, or a pre-workout drink to give you the increased focus and drive to complete a great workout. However, others work out better in the evening after work when they are energized and awake or need a method to help them unwind after their long day. 

It is also a good idea to plan out your workouts before you arrive. This will help you best utilize your workout time and get it completed so you don't waste your time wandering around the gym. Plan out what cardio exercise you want to do, or decide if you want to focus on strength training and what type of activity you want to complete.
