Understanding The Role Of Orthotics In Treating Achilles Tendonitis

Health & Medical Blog

Achilles tendonitis is a condition that stems from wear to the achilles tendon and/or its sheathe. This damage usually stems from a rapid increase to your exercise routine, but it can also stem from overuse. When you start feeling pain in your tendon, you should not try to muscle through the pain. instead, you need to take action to allow the tendon to heal and to strengthen it.

Heal Lifts

inserting heel lifts into your shoes can help with achilles tendonitis in that they reduce the range of movement for your tendon and should thus reduce the risk of overextending the tendon, which can lead to further damage. The key when using heel lifts is to insert lifts into both shoes even if you only have symptoms in one tendon. Using only one lift can create an imbalance which an lead to muscle pain and further injuries. You should also know that heel lifts are only a temporary solution in that they will relieve strain on your tendon and give it time to rest, but they will not strengthen the tendon.

Orthotics

If you have arch problems, you may need to use orthotic inserts to correct your arch problem. If you have too much or not enough arch, you can cause your tendon to rub on one side of its sheathe or the other, and this friction can lead to damage. While you can buy commercial orthotics that are designed to support your arch, the best orthotics are custom-made to fit your feet. To get custom orthotic inserts for your feet, you will have to go to a podiatrist. While orthotics should help to straighten your footfall, they should not be seen as replacements for physical therapy.

The Role of Physical Therapy

As explained above, orthotics can help to correct problems with your bone structure, but they will not necessarily increase muscle strength. To treat your tendonitis successfully, you need to learn stretches and exercises that will help to improve the function of your tendon and reduce the risk of future injury.

The achilles tendon is the largest tendon in the body--and for good reason. Your tendon provides structural strength to keep you upright, but it also plays a key role in providing the explosive energy needed for running and jumping. Because of the rigors placed on the tendon especially when you increase your exercise routine, injury is common. If you get injured, you don't have to look at it as the end of your physical aspirations. Instead, tendonitis should be seen as a temporary and treatable setback.

Cancer Treatment Questions: Understanding The Differences in Options

After watching my mother navigate treatment for breast cancer in my early teens, I knew pretty much what to expect from my dad's diagnosis with prostate cancer. What I didn't know was how different chemotherapy and radiation can affect different people. My mother became very ill while my dad seemed to weather the treatments with few ill effects. I spent a long time researching the differences in treatments, types of chemotherapy, and how each one can react differently with the body. I created this blog to help others understand the same things, because I knew I couldn't be the only one unfamiliar with it. I hope it helps you if someone you love is facing treatment for any type of cancer.
